Southern California
Avant-garde Blackout
Also known as SCAB, this film festival pops up each year in a different city in the SoCal area to put a spotlight on an often under-appreciated genre of art and film.
An unnerving mark
SCAB’s identity is as eccentric as the films the festival features. To communicate the oddities of experimental horror film within its brand, abstract dynamism needed to be the foremost goal in creating this identity.
To evoke a sense of unease and fear with a static logo alone would have been a challenge—a mistake, even. The objective was for the brand to represent more of a feeling than product. So born is a library of manipulated appearances of the SCAB mark, and limitless possibilities.
Program booklet
Like any festival, SCAB distributes booklets to guests—guides that contain vital information to the attendees’ experience: programming schedules, directions, etc.
SCAB’s program booklet for 2024 is visually captivating from the cover to each carefully laid out spread. The object itself is a novelty in its craft, between being printed on a grey-toned paper and being sewn-bound as if it were stitched together.
